Commemorative Photo of General Nogi and General Stoessel Meeting, Framed, Meiji Era
This is a commemorative photograph of the Shuishiying Meeting held on January 5, 1905 (Meiji 38), after the capture of Port Arthur Fortress during the Russo-Japanese War.
It is a historically valuable item commemorating the meeting between General Nogi and General Stessel.
This is known as a historic scene where General Maresuke Nogi, commander of the Japanese Third Army, and Lieutenant General Anatoly Stessel, commander of the Port Arthur Fortress, transcended enemy lines to praise each other's valiant efforts.
Photo Details
Location: Held at a farmhouse in the small village of Shuishiying in Lushun, Dalian, China.
People: In the middle row (central row), the second person from the left is General Nogi, and to his right is General Stessel. Staff officers such as Chief of Staff Ijichi on the Japanese side and Chief of Staff Reis on the Russian side are lined up around them.
Background: At the time of the meeting, General Nogi, respecting the honor of the defeated General Stessel, allowed him to keep his sword during the meeting. This episode, embodying Bushido spirit, later became the subject of a song by the Ministry of Education.
This is a very old item that my grandfather, born in 1889, cherished. It has faded and shows signs of age-related deterioration.
Thank you for your consideration.
