While the celebration of *Kanreki* (60th birthday) originates from China, *Hakuju* (99th birthday) is a celebration unique to Japan, born from the structure of the kanji character. It is derived from the fact that taking one away from the kanji for hundred (百) results in the character for white (白), and this is applied to the number 99, which is one less than hundred. There is also a belief that upon reaching 99 years old, one sheds worldly impurities and becomes like an immortal with white hair and a white beard.
How about this for a longevity celebration gift?
